"Jesus immediately stretched out His hand and lifted him up and said, "What little faith you have! Why would you let doubt win?" Matthew 14:31 (Passion Translation)
Miracles are the marvelous, unexplainable acts of God. Miracles also reaffirmed Jesus identity as the Son of God, they also teach and reveal to us the nature of God's Kingdom. In Matthew 14 we see nothing but miracles. Jesus first feeds the multitudes who are hungry and desolate, with five loaves of bread and two fish. He serves about 5000, men, women and children, then so much that the disciples filled twelve baskets full of leftovers. After feeding the people, He tells His disciples to get into their boat and go to the other side of the lake while He stayed behind to dismiss the people. After the crowds dispersed, Jesus went up into the hills to pray to His Father.
In the early hours of the morning the disciples run into a storm, tossed back and forth by the sea, worried and afraid they fight against the heavy waves. But at about 3:00 in the morning Jesus comes from the other side of the sea walking on the water, in this midst of the terrifying cries of His disciples, Jesus speaks out immediately and tells them to calm down and not to be afraid for I Am is here. Thinking it was a ghost Peter calls to the Lord that if this is You let me come to you doing the same. Jesus says sure come and by faith Peter gets out of the boat and walked on the water towards Jesus. But when he gazed on the strong wind and waves doubt begin to cause him to drown.
In scripture the sea often represented the forces of evil because it's powerful, uncontrollable, raging and deadly. Some say it can represent the evil underworld as in the example of the pigs being cast into the sea who asked the Lord to send them there. The only person who has power over this power is God. Consider the sea of circumstance that is blowing against you right now, the winds of lost and change. It can be terrifying to see and feel. The forces of evil that are working to kill, steal and destroy your purpose in God, are consistently brewing through settle waves that then get stronger and overtake you.
Peter is walking on top of his troubles but the moment he gazes on what is happening and not the Lord, doubt begins to drown his faith. He forgets that the One who controls the sea has called him, but his faith did not survive. Jesus says as he rescues him, "Why would you let doubt win!" Your storm or situation may have you drowning in doubt but I encourage today not to let doubt win. Jesus is right there He controls everything. This is your day for a fresh season of miracles. Don't allow everything that is out of control around you dictate to your belief that God controls it all.
My question to you is when was the last time you walked on water? Set your gaze on Jesus, He will never let you sink but so low. Trust the process and know God is using this trouble, adversity, affliction, whatever it is to get you to build your faith and shift you to another place. Even against all odds you cannot let doubt win!
